Strategicon: Orc Con 2021

Virtual gaming conventions continue in 2021 as the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic continues. Strategicon is a great bargain at US$5 for the whole 4 day weekend convention. It plays only, mainly on Discord for voice and Roll20 for role playing games. For my first game, it was my first time trying out Classic Traveller by Marc Miller.

We played a classic science fiction scenario, an investigation of a silent space station. I won’t give out any spoilers. The mechanics were simple and sufficient. The mapping technology of Roll20 gave us what we wanted oh so many years ago: true mapping where the details are revealed as we explore them. Even better, the avatars had flashlights and areas were lit by the way we shined our flashlights. The simpler Traveller system is welcome for virtual gaming. It avoids excessive number crunching, which lets us get more into character and feel the danger of the exploration. Kudos to game master Greg Alan for creating and running such a fun scenario.
